Zverev secures redemption as Germany defeats Australia to advance to the final of the United Cup.

Germany redeemed themselves and ended Australia’s United Cup campaign at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena. After Alexander Zverev suffered a singles defeat to Alex de Minaur, he joined forces with Laura Siegemund to secure a 2-1 victory in the tie’s deciding rubber.

In a marathon 28-point match tie-break, Zverev and Siegemund triumphed over Matt Ebden and the women’s world doubles No 1, Storm Hunter, in the mixed doubles, winning 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (2-7), 15-13. As a result, Germany will face Poland in Sunday’s final.

The semi-final match hinged on the mixed doubles after Angelique Kerber defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) in the opening women’s singles. De Minaur then pulled off an impressive comeback against Zverev, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to level the tie.

De Minaur’s victory over Zverev propels him into the ATP Top 10 for the first time. Speaking about his win, De Minaur said, “It’s another milestone, but the job’s not done. We keep improving, we keep working. It’s going to be a fun Aussie summer.”

Zverev posed a significant challenge for De Minaur, fresh off his maiden victory against Novak Djokovic and a win over Taylor Fritz. However, De Minaur managed to turn the tide in the second set and carried the momentum into the third, ultimately emerging victorious.

In contrast to De Minaur’s composure, Tomljanovic struggled under pressure. Despite initially dominating the match against the returning three-time grand slam champion, she faltered in the second set and wasted two match points before losing in a tie-break.

Meanwhile, at the Brisbane International, Jordan Thompson, the Australian world No 43, narrowly lost in the semi-final to Grigor Dimitrov, who went on to face Holger Rune in the final. Rune, the top seed, fought hard for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) victory against Roman Safiullin.

In anticipation of Melbourne, Rune acknowledged the pressure he will face and sees tomorrow’s match as a crucial test of his abilities.
