Victor Wembanyama, the sensational rookie of the Spurs, achieves an extraordinary triple-double with a remarkable 10 blocks.

Victor Wembanyama achieved his second triple-double and his first one with blocked shots. The rookie from San Antonio blocked a shot by Gradey Dick from Toronto with 6:32 remaining in the fourth quarter on Monday night, making him the first player in the NBA to record a triple-double with blocked shots as one of the categories in over three years.

In addition to his impressive defensive performance, Wembanyama also contributed 27 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists within just 29 minutes of play, leading the Spurs to a 122-99 victory over the Raptors. Before Monday’s game, Wembanyama already held the record as the NBA’s top shot-blocker this season.

“He displayed versatility in all aspects of the game,” praised Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

This is the first triple-double with blocked shots since Clint Capela achieved 13 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 blocks for Atlanta against Minnesota on January 22, 2021. It was also the last time any NBA player blocked 10 shots in a single game.

Hakeem Olajuwon holds the record for the most triple-doubles with blocks since the statistic was officially recorded in the NBA, achieving it 11 times. Dikembe Mutombo follows closely behind with 10 triple-doubles, while David Robinson, a Hall of Famer from the Spurs, has nine. Robinson even managed a quadruple-double, and the only other Spurs player to achieve a triple-double with blocks is Artis Gilmore, with his sole accomplishment in the 1984-85 season.

“Wembanyama is a player who will leave his mark on this league for the next 15 years. We must find ways to combat his presence and playing style,” commented Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic. “He possesses a unique combination of size and shot-blocking ability. We need to improve on how we confront that.”

Wembanyama was the first overall pick in last year’s NBA draft and will be making his debut at the All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. He is set to participate in the Rising Stars game on Friday night and the Skills Competition on Saturday night.

The other instance of Wembanyama achieving a triple-double this season was on January 10th against Detroit. He accumulated 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists, although he did not record any blocks that night.
