Ugandan LGBTQ+ advocate left in critical condition following a vicious knife assault

A motorbike-riding person attacked Steven Kabuye, an LGBTQ+ activist from Uganda, with a knife after he had received death threats. Kabuye, 25, sustained knife injuries and was found unconscious on the outskirts of Kampala, the capital city. Police stated that human rights defenders had previously warned about the possibility of attacks against LGBTQ+ individuals after Uganda implemented one of the strictest anti-gay legislations in the world last year. According to Patrick Onyango, the police spokesperson, during the investigation Kabuye reported being targeted by two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle, who aimed at his neck with a knife. Kabuye managed to protect his neck with his arm, resulting in a hand injury. However, the assailants continued the attack, stabbing him in the stomach. Local residents discovered him and took him to a medical clinic. Richard Lusimbo, the head of the Uganda Key Populations Consortium, expressed concern and emphasized the importance of Kabuye receiving appropriate medical care and accountability for the perpetrators. Hans Senfuma, another gay rights activist from Uganda, claimed that the attackers intended to kill Kabuye and had been following him for days. Kabuye, who works for the Coloured Voices Media Foundation advocating for LGBTQ+ youth, informed investigators at the hospital that he had been receiving death threats since March 2023. He had returned to Uganda in December after traveling abroad in June. The Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023, which Uganda adopted in May of the same year, imposes severe penalties, including capital punishment for “aggravated homosexuality” and life imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations. Kabuye expressed his concerns about the implications of this law, stressing that it violates basic human rights and promotes discrimination and persecution against the LGBTQ+ community.
