Trevor Lawrence of the Jaguars will be absent for his inaugural start due to a shoulder sprain.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will be absent from the inaugural match of his professional career due to a sprained throwing shoulder.

Throughout the week, Lawrence observed practice sessions and on Friday, he was officially declared out of the team’s home finale against Carolina (2-13). CJ Beathard will take the field as the starting quarterback after a three-year hiatus on Sunday, as the Jaguars (8-7) find themselves in a must-win situation.

During Sunday’s 30-12 defeat against Tampa Bay, Lawrence sprained his AC joint while diving in an attempt to secure a first down on a fourth-and-1 play in the third quarter. Following the game, he struggled to lift his arm in the locker room.

Prior to his injury, Lawrence’s performance was lackluster, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble as Jacksonville fell behind 30-0. He completed 17 of 29 passes for 211 yards, and all three turnovers resulted in Tampa Bay touchdowns.

In a post-game critique of the team, Lawrence expressed, “it appears as though we don’t even practice.”

In the game against the Panthers, the Jaguars will attempt to end their losing streak and maintain their hopes of reaching the postseason for the second consecutive year. A victory, coupled with losses by Houston and Indianapolis, would secure the jumbled AFC South for Jacksonville.

Since being chosen as the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, Lawrence had started in 51 consecutive games. However, he has been sidelined in three of the last four games due to various injuries: a sprained ankle against Cincinnati, a concussion against Baltimore, and a sprained shoulder against Tampa Bay.

“When one thing starts to improve, something else happens,” Lawrence commented on Wednesday. “It’s going to be that kind of year. It’s just the nature of the sport. It’s unfortunate, but I’ll keep pushing through and return as soon as possible.”

In Jacksonville’s past three games, Lawrence has committed eight turnovers, bringing his season total to 19. He has been hindered by a porous offensive line and injuries to key receivers Christian Kirk and Zay Jones.

This will mark the first instance in Lawrence’s career, at any level, where he is absent from a game due to injury. He never missed a start in high school and only missed two starts in college as a result of Covid-19 protocols.
