The runaway struggles to return to Cheltenham in order to bring joy to Hobson.

After 11 instances of finishing in second place at Cheltenham, trainer Richard Hobson finally achieved victory at the renowned jumping venue on Saturday. Fugitif, with odds of 13-2, emerged victorious in the December Gold Cup, overtaking the leading Il Ridoto in the final moment. Gavin Sheehan, the jockey for Fugitif, initially trailed behind both Il Ridoto and Frero Banbou. However, Il Ridoto maintained the lead until the last stretch, where Sheehan spurred his partner to make a final desperate push and cross the finish line just in time.
Speaking about Fugitif, Sheehan expressed admiration for the horse, stating, “He is an exceptional horse to ride. He made a single mistake, but apart from that, he performed flawlessly. It’s an incredible sensation to descend the hill with such speed. However, I believed the race was over, and our only hope was to salvage a respectable finish.”
Hobson also believed that Fugitif had fallen too far behind to secure a victory. He remarked, “He was trailing significantly, but having a skillful jockey on his back meant he had a fighting chance.”
