PDC world darts: Humphries triumphs in the ‘most challenging match’ while Sherrock suffers elimination

Luke Humphries overcame a slow start to his PDC world darts championship campaign with a 3-0 victory against Lee Evans at Alexandra Palace. Despite a sluggish performance, Humphries, the third seed, is considered one of the top contenders for the title as he has recently secured wins at the World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts, and Players Championship Finals. Although Evans had moments of brilliance, including a 170 checkout in the second set, he struggled with his checkouts throughout the match. Humphries acknowledged his below-par performance but emphasized the importance of advancing to the next round. He expressed confidence that he would perform better in the next game.

Unfortunately, Fallon Sherrock, who made history four years ago as the first woman to win a match at the championship, could not replicate her success this time. Sherrock won the first set against Jermaine Wattimena, a regular participant in the tournament, but eventually lost the match after losing the next three sets. Reflecting on her performance, Sherrock expressed disappointment and credited Wattimena for being the superior player on the night.

Jim Williams faced a mathematical blunder in his match against Norman Madhoo from Guyana. Despite a scoring mistake in the third set, Williams managed to recover and secure a comfortable 3-0 victory. In the second round, he is set to face former champion Peter Wright on Wednesday.

Matt Campbell celebrated his first win on the Alexandra Palace stage after a thrilling 3-2 triumph over Lourence Ilagan. Although Campbell dominated the first two sets, Ilagan staged a comeback by winning a set. However, Campbell regained his composure in the deciding set and sealed the victory with an impressive 128 checkout.

In other matches, Ricky Evans defeated Simon Adams 3-0, while Joe Cullen, the 14th seed, emerged victorious with a 3-0 win over Darren Penhall. Florian Hempel staged a comeback to defeat Dylan Slevin 3-1, and Niels Zonneveld clinched a 3-1 victory against Darren Webster.
