PDC global darts: Van Gerwen effortlessly advances against Bunting while Smith taken aback by Dobey.

Michael van Gerwen made easy work of his important match at the World Darts Championship against Stephen Bunting with a 4-0 demolition, but defending champion Michael Smith was eliminated with a shocking 4-0 loss to Chris Dobey.

Bunting struggled to find any rhythm, while Van Gerwen was in a ruthless mood, reaching the quarter-finals without dropping a set.

“We all knew Stephen Bunting was playing exceptionally well,” Van Gerwen said. “You have to bring your best game. Although I didn’t showcase my best game, I made the right moves at the right moments. I’m satisfied with my performance. We still have a long way to go, but I feel confident.”

Dobey entered his match against Smith in great form, but he still surprised the audience as he easily defeated the reigning champion with an average of 102.43 and three checkouts over 100. “He has beaten me many times, so it feels good to finally get one back,” Dobey said.

Gary Anderson came from behind to defeat Boris Krcmar 4-1, bouncing back after losing the first set with a checkout of 161. “I thought it would be a tough match after Boris won the first set,” said Anderson, who will face Brendan Dolan in the next round. “Sky keeps saying I’m done, but fortunately for you, I’m not finished yet.”

Raymond van Barneveld set up an exciting clash with teenage sensation Luke Littler after battling through to the last 16 at Alexandra Palace.

Van Barneveld didn’t perform at his best, but still defeated Jim Williams 4-1 to secure a Saturday match against 16-year-old Littler, who was born 21 days after the Dutchman won his fifth world title in 2007. Van Barneveld told Sky Sports: “I’m excited to play against Luke Littler. When I was 16, I was playing with Lego and Playmobil. We didn’t have the internet or anything like that.

“This guy is amazing, and I can’t wait for that game. He is a talented player and I’m looking forward to meeting him tomorrow night.”
