One individual unaccounted for following explosion and blaze at industrial estate in south Wales.

At least one building was destroyed in a severe explosion at an industrial estate in Rhondda Cynon Taf on Wednesday evening.

More than 12 hours later, one person remains unaccounted for following the explosion and major fire at the industrial estate in south Wales.

Emergency services are still at the incident at Treforest industrial estate in Rhondda Cynon Taf on Thursday.

According to South Wales police, there have been no reports of any serious injuries. However, one person remains unaccounted for.

The explosion occurred around 7pm on Wednesday at the two-storey Rizla House on Severn Road. The Welsh ambulance service treated three people at the scene.

Richard Hayward, the landlord of Rizla House, described a “severe explosion” on the ground floor of the property. Tenants of the building include a car restorer, a towel supplier, and a gym.

Hayward stated, “It seems that the fire started in one of the lower units, but we’re not sure which one. There was a severe explosion. Based on information from various sources, including the fire brigade, the building has been destroyed. I expect it will look like a wreck once we’re able to access it.”

The building, which used to produce Rizla cigarette papers, was constructed in the 1920s and expanded in the 1940s and 50s.

Lucy Artiss, a tattoo artist who works at Sixteen Circles in Rizla House, stated, “Our tattoo shop has been destroyed.” She mentioned that workers and staff were able to escape through a fire exit. “It was a wonderful place with a great sense of family. I’m devastated to have lost it,” she added.

Local residents and workers stated that buildings in the vicinity were shaken by the explosion. Jonny Foxhall, owner of the nearby music venue Green Rooms, reported that their front door was flung open. “To feel the shockwave from the explosion is something I’ve never experienced before,” he said.
