Jeremy Miles throws his hat in the ring for the position of Welsh first minister, replacing Mark Drakeford.

The education minister, Jeremy Miles, has joined the economy minister, Vaughan Gething, in the race to become Welsh first minister. Miles, a young gay man from a working-class family, expressed his disbelief at the thought of leading the Labour party and Wales.

Miles, who represents Neath in south Wales, was born and raised in Pontarddulais. He emphasized the support he has received from party members, colleagues, and various other individuals in the movement.

He is determined to continue the work of Mark Drakeford and committed to a bright future for Wales led by Welsh Labour. Despite the challenges ahead, he remains hopeful, particularly with the collaboration between a UK Labour government, led by Keir Starmer, and the Welsh Labour government.

If Gething were to win, he would become the first black leader of a country in Europe. Miles is portrayed by his supporters as a mature candidate capable of working effectively with all factions of the Welsh party, as well as establishing strong relationships with UK Labour and opposition parties.

Miles would make history as the first openly gay leader of Wales. He has previously spoken about the difficulties he faced as a young gay individual when his identity was not acknowledged within the school curriculum.

In recent weeks, Miles has had to defend the Welsh government’s education record following poor Pisa scores. Gething, on the other hand, will need to account for his actions as health minister during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Membership of the Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice Cymru expressed concerns about Gething’s supporters praising his work during the pandemic, considering it disrespectful and distressing.

Before his political career, Miles held significant positions in the media sector, working for ITV, NBC Universal, and other international clients in the broadcast and digital industries.
