In a significant trade, there is a proposal for the New York Knicks to send RJ Barrett to the Raptors in exchange for OG Anunoby.

The Toronto Raptors have acquired RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley from the New York Knicks, according to a source familiar with the deal on Saturday.

The Knicks will receive OG Anunoby in return, along with Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn, the person told the Associated Press, speaking anonymously as the trade is not yet official.

ESPN first reported the trade.

Although the Knicks are giving up two key offensive players in Barrett, a starting forward, and Quickley, a top reserve, the trade is expected to bolster their defense, with Anunoby leading the league in steals last season.

The trade comes after the Knicks recently filed a lawsuit against the Raptors, accusing them of conspiring to steal scouting materials after hiring a former Knicks employee.

The deal, which brings Barrett back to his hometown, leaves both teams short-handed for their games on Saturday. The Raptors were playing in Detroit, where the Pistons were aiming to avoid their 29th consecutive loss, while the Knicks were in Indiana.

Anunoby is likely to fill Barrett’s spot in the Knicks’ starting lineup. The 6ft 7in swingman has been averaging 15.1 points and had his highest-scoring game of the season against the Knicks on December 11th, scoring 29 points.

Barrett currently has an average of 18.2 points, but he has struggled with his three-point shooting in recent games, making only 2 of 12 attempts. He was the No. 3 pick in the 2019 draft and helped the Knicks reach the playoffs twice in the last three seasons.

Quickley was the runner-up for the Sixth Man of the Year award last season, but there has been speculation about his future with the Knicks since the team did not extend his contract before this season. The Knicks will need to find a replacement for his 15 points per game off the bench and his ability to play both guard positions.
