China appoints Dong Jun, former chief of the navy, as the new defense minister.

China has named a new defense minister, following the removal of Li Shangfu amid corruption allegations, two months ago.
The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s de facto legislature, announced the appointment of Dong Jun, who was formerly the chief of China’s navy.
The announcement comes after three senior executives from the aerospace defense industry were recently removed from a top advisory body to the Chinese Communist Party, believed to be linked to an anti-graft campaign that potentially involved Li.
Li, who served as defense minister and head of the military equipment procurement department, is under investigation for corruption related to the procurement of military equipment and has not been seen in public since August 25.
The appointment of Dong, a navy chief, as defense minister is seen as an indication of China’s increasing focus on the South China Sea as a geopolitical battleground with the US.
In a meeting in November, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden agreed to resume senior-level military talks in an effort to reduce tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
