Alistair Darling’s life story: honoring the memory of a remarkable individual

While Alistair Darling was involved with the Plant commission on electoral systems in the early 1990s, contrary to the obituary’s initial statement, it did not propose proportional representation for the House of Commons.

The commission members held different opinions, and I served as its secretary. We ultimately agreed to endorse the Supplementary Vote, an alternative to the Alternative Vote system, rather than a completely proportional system. From what I recall, Alistair, who actively participated in our discussions, seemed satisfied with this decision.
